No. 1 Dolehide rallies after dropping first set

ASHLAND, Ky. — The top two seeds — No. 1 Caroline Dolehide and No. 2 Nao Hibino — and two qualifiers advanced to the quarterfinals in the main draw of the Braidy Industries $60,000 Women’s Tennis Classic at the Ashland Tennis Center on Thursday.

Dolehide (USA) dropped the first set against Canadian Francoise Abanda but took the next two for a 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-3 victory. Dolehide won 68% of her first serve points and didn’t have any double faults. She will face Misaki Doi of Japan on the stadium court on Friday.

Hibino (JPN) defeated Whitney Osuigwe (USA) 6-2, 6-4 and will face tournament qualifier Gail Brodsky.

Brodsky (USA) had three aces and won 8 of her 10 services games to knock off Julia Elbaba (USA) in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.

Another qualifier, Maegan Manasse (USA), used three sets to beat Amanda Rodgers (USA) 7-5, 3-6, 6-1. Manasse beat eighth-seeded Mayo Hibi of Japan on Wednesday and will face Sanaz Marand (USA) on Friday.

The quarterfinals are set and will begin Friday morning with Manasse-Marand on the stadium court. The match will be live streamed beginning at 10 a.m. Dolehide-Doi will follow and will also be live streamed.

The doubles semifinals are also set to be played on Friday. Brynn Boren (USA) and Brodsky will face Marand and Osuigwe. On the other side of the draw, Jovana Jaksic (SRB) and Renata Zarazua (MEX) will take on Chanel Simmonds (RSA) and Abigal Tere-Apisah (PNG).
