ASHLAND, Ky. — Alison Riske played in the Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital Tennis Classic in Ashland when she 17 years old. Now she is 29 and ranked in the Top 20 in the World. She defeated World No. 1 Ashley Barty in Wimbledon in 2019.
Two wins over Top-10 players and a debut in the WTA’s Top 20 earned Alison Riske Team USA Player of the Month honors for September, as the Grand Slam season wrapped and the tours took off to Asia.
Riske, a Wimbledon quarterfinalist this summer, knocked out No. 3 seed Elina Svitolina and No. 7 Petra Kvitova at the Wuhan Open in China before falling to No. 14 Aryna Sabalenka in a three-set final that would help Riske break into the Top 20 for the first time in early October.
The Pittsburgh native’s performance in Wuhan was enough to edge out Sofia Kenin for Player of the Month honors. Kenin won her third WTA title of 2019 at the International-level tournament Guangzhou, beating 2011 US Open champion Sam Stosur in a three-set final.
Riske played in the Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital Tennis Classic in Ashland in 2005. The tournament was held from 2004 to 2008 and was resumed again in 2018 with new title sponsors Braidy Industries and Bon Secours Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.
