Anna Kalinskaya of Russia defeated 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens at the US Open in New York on Tuesday.

NEW YORK — Anna Kalinskaya of Russia defeated 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens 6-3, 6-4 Tuesday in the first round of the US Open in New York. Kalinskaya was the No. 2 seed in the Braidy Industries Tennis Classic in Ashland in July.

“I’m very happy with my win,” Kalinskaya said after Tuesday’s victory. “I’m very happy that I played on this court and I really enjoyed the atmosphere being there.”

Kalinskaya lost in the first round in Ashland to Alexa Glatch (USA), 6-4, 6-4. Australian Ellen Perez (AUS) withstood grueling heat and claimed the championship 6-2, 3-2 in a retirement against Zoe Hives (AUS).

Perez was the tournament’s No. 7 seed and also beat last year’s finalist Maegan Manasse (USA) in the quarterfinals. She had a three-set victory over Katie Swan (GRB) in the semifinals 7-6(6) 0-6, 6-3, and another three-setter against Catherine Harrison in the round of 16, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.

The Ashland doubles championship was won by American pair Sanaz Marand (USA) and Caitlin Whoriskey (USA), who defeated Vladica Babic (MNE) and Julia Rosenqvist (SWE) 7-6(4) 6-4.

The Braidy Industries Tennis Classic is a $60,000 USTA Pro Circuit event. It was part of the US Open Wild Card Challenge for the second straight year.
