Winner earns spot in Braidy Industries $60,000 Women’s Tennis Classic main draw
ASHLAND, Ky. — Emily Fanning of New Zealand will take on former ITF All-American and NCAA national champion Haley Carter Sunday afternoon in the prequalifying finals of the Braidy Industries $60,000 Women’s Tennis Classic presented by Bon Secours Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.
Fanning and Carter each won two matches on Saturday at the Ashland Tennis Center to reach the finals. The winner of today’s match at 1 p.m. will earn a spot in the tournament’s main draw, to be played July 24-29. The loser will be awarded a Wild-Card to play in the tournament’s qualifier, set for July 22-23.
Fanning, the No. 1 player at the University of Kentucky, defeated Maria Antilla 6-0, 7-6 (7-5) and Victoria Emma 6-3, 4-6, 10-8. Third sets of the prequalifier were played as 10-point tiebreakers.
“I enjoyed playing these tough matches, and I want to win the main draw to play here next week,” Fanning said.
Carter beat Amy Ditty Lochow of Huntington 6-0, 6-0, and Furman University’s Joelle Kissel 6-4, 6-3.
Semifinalists Emma and Kissell will be awarded Wild-Cards into the qualifying tournament. Both the qualifying and main draw are 32-player fields. All matches will be at the Ashland Tennis Center. Admission for prequalifying matches is free.
