ASHLAND, Ky. — Build Ashland is serving up some community philanthropy Saturday, June 30, by helping Ashland get ready for a major tennis tournament.
The inaugural Braidy Industries $60,000 USTA Pro Circuit Women’s Tennis Classic will bring 56 professional players from around the globe to the Ashland Tennis Center next month. The tournament, co-sponsored by Bon Secours/Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital, comes with $60,000 in prize money, opportunities for players to ascend in the pro rankings and the possibility of playing in the U.S. Open tennis tournament. The tournament is from July 22 through 29 at the center.
Build Ashland’s Dave Daniel said the non-profit is asking for public assistance in getting the Tennis Center spruced up for the bigtime event.
“Every year we go to the Tennis Center and we help prune the grounds with them,” Daniel said. “This year, Jerry Groce (tennis center director) asked how, with the event coming, they need help painting, spreading of mulch. So we are going to help them repaint some of the entrance area and also help them clean out some areas of the nearby creek and make it real pretty for when the tournament comes.”
Participants are encouraged to dress appropriately for such work. The paint will be provided by the Tennis Center.
Volunteers are needed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the facility, 1300 Oakview Road.
