Volunteer of the Year, Local League Coordinator of the Year also part of Ashland event; ceremony set for Jan. 25 in Louisville
ASHLAND, Ky. — The return of professional tennis to Ashland this summer certainly made its impact.
USTA Kentucky has awarded the Braidy Industries $60,000 Women’s Tennis Classic as its Tournament of the Year, with an awards ceremony set for Jan. 25, 2019, in Louisville.
Janice Watson, president of the Greater Ashland Tennis Association, will also be honored as the Volunteer of the Year. Ashland Tennis Center Manager Jerry Groce will receive the Local League Coordinator of the Year.
Local juniors Parker Clarke (Most Improved Boy) and Ashton Whitt (Best Boys Sportsmanship) will also be recognized at the ceremony.
The Tennis Classic, sponsored by Braidy Industries and presented by Bon Secours Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital, was held July 22-29 at the Ashland Tennis Center and was widely praised for its success. American Gail Brodsky won the singles title with a three-set victory over Maegan Manasse.
“I am very proud of our volunteers that made the Tournament of the Year award possible,” Tournament Director Jack Ditty said. “Everyone who participated, sponsored, competed, volunteered and promoted our tournament this great week in Ashland deserves our thanks for a job well done.”
In additional to the main singles and doubles draw, the Tennis Classic hosted prequalifier and qualifier tournaments, and was live streamed online. Dozens of sponsors and volunteers supported the tournament, which involved the surrounding community with several public events, including a day-long kids sports clinic and a FitFest. Several local organizations and businesses set up informational stations for FitFest.
The USTA Kentucky awards ceremony will be Jan. 25, 2019, at the Omni Louisville Hotel:
